The CanopY Overhead Protection System
A New State-of-the-Art Overhead Protection System.
Designed to protect the public & look good doing it.
Since 1931 Universal Builder Supply has earned its reputation by leading the construction industry in innovation in protection systems. With the increased awareness of safety comes the demand for overhead protection, which has traditionally been utilitarian at best. Most consist of unsightly metal posts, braces, and beams and block visibility of the building from the street. With the CanopY, UBS has innovated a new system combining both form and function to create open space, light, and beautiful design, while maintaining structural requirements. At UBS we pride ourselves on being partners with our clients, not simply another vendor or supplier.

“The Center for Architecture is honored to debut CanopY, the stylish new overhead protection system recently developed by Universal Builders Supply (UBS). In order to accommodate necessary facade repairs to our building, we turned to UBS, who we had successfully partnered with on an exhibition on scaffolding in 2017. Understanding, our financial constraints during the pandemic, and working closely with the Center for Architecture, UBS agreed to provide us with their CanopY system instead of a basic sidewalk shed. The CanopY exceeds our expectations; its elegant white structure, transparent ceiling, and dynamic lighting have brightened and enhanced our entryway.”

“I am a resident of 534 LaGuardia Place in NYC and I wanted to thank you for the new canopy that UBS installed in front of our building. It makes an enormous difference especially since Local Law 11 will require it to stay here for a number of months until edifice work is complete. It is such a vast improvement over the structures that exist throughout NYC and what they feel like just when going out for a walk—for example walking up lower Fifth Avenue makes me want to cross the street continually to avoid all the dark and unattractive coverings on the sidewalk. The design, the lighting makes it so attractive and I have noticed some people actually photographing and even filming underneath it. And as I resident looking down on it I can actually see the sidewalk and who is passing by. So all my thanks and congratulations on such a wonderful design!” —Dan Wigutow
